1. Agent Coulson's Dance With Death (The Avengers & Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.)
The Moment: Agent Coulson is mortally wounded by Loki in The Avengers in probably the MCU's most emotionally gratifying moment to date. His death means something, and Nick Fury exploits it to help bring the superheroes together and save the day. In the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show, however, he's brought back from the dead thanks to alien technology, and to date the MCU movies have simply neglected to address this. Why It Needs To Be Retconned: The Coulson issue is a frustrating one, because his resurrection seems to undermine the importance of his death in The Avengers, but by keeping Coulson out of all subsequent MCU movies, it's as though Marvel are aware of this and want to downplay him being alive again. It might be fine for those casual Marvel fans who haven't even heard of the show, but for those who watch it and also those who are simply aware of it, Coulson feels like an elephant in the room. They derailed a grand moment from The Avengers for the sake of their TV show, but won't just go the whole hog and indulge it completely by referencing it in the MCU movies. They want to have it both ways, but they can't. Will It Be?: No way. Coulson could appear in future MCU movies to hang a lampshade on the whole issue, but it doesn't seem very likely, and an actual retcon definitely won't happen. As it pertains to the TV show, even killing Coulson again wouldn't really be enough by this point, because so much of AoS's appeal was in finding the truth about Coulson's revival, and he's obviously such a crucial character in the show. Had he been brought back for a few episodes somehow and killed off again, it might've worked, but the damage has already been done to one of the most important scenes in The Avengers. Which terrible and cringe-worthy comic book movie moments are you desperate to see retconned?
