9 Comic Book Movies That Divided Critics And Fans

5. Constantine

Suicide Squad Reviews
Warner Bros.

Constantine is a unique case. If you’ve never seen or read the comics, then it’s a fun demon thriller with a cool performance by Keanu Reeves. If you have read the comics, it’s an utter travesty that’s offensive to the source material, the fanbase and maybe the universe itself; Constantine was changed from a blonde Liverpudlian to a black haired American, quite a dramatic transformation, to be fair.

Since most of the critics hadn’t even heard of Hellblazer, however, they had a better time with the movie, enjoying Reeves’ snarky line delivery and the creative monsters on offer.

There was no good reason for this other than to get a big name star, and there was no way Reeves was going to try an accent to make up for this; we all remember Dracula. To this day Constantine is mostly well-regarded by those who didn’t read the comic, and despised by those who did.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
