9 Distractingly Bad Performances In Otherwise Great Movies

1. The Matrix: Most Of The Cast

Django Unchained Quentin Tarantino

The Matrix might be a visually glorious, excellently-plotted and stunningly well-made piece of science-fiction cinema and one of the most beloved films of the 1990s, but much like with Saw, the overall skill of the film distracts from just how awful virtually All of the acting is.

Hugo Weaving is deliciously evil as Agent Smith, Laurence Fishburne is excellent as the quiet, wise Morpheus and Joe Pantoliano is solid as Cypher, but pretty much everyone else gives a terrible performance.

It's somewhat easy to ignore this since Neo is a very good and well-written character, but Keanu Reeves does give a very wooden performance as him. Carrie Anne-Moss, meanwhile, is even worse and most of the other humans who are with them in the real-world give laughably sloppy, amateurish performances.

The Matrix, which turned 20(!) last year, is still a good watch but the majority of the acting is shockingly bad and as a result of this, combined with the fairly clunky dialogue that these actors deliver, it's quite likely that the next time you re-watch The Matrix you might not love it quite as much as you used to.
