7. Michael Myers - Halloween III: Season Of The Witch

There are two things every article on the Halloween franchise must do. You have to fight the urge to comment on the similarity of the killer's name with the man who played Austin Powers and must have a throwaway comment about how the third one was rubbish. This one looks set to fail on both points; I've inadvertently mentioned Mike Myers and am now about to praise Season Of The Witch. The main reason people criticise Halloween III is because it doesn't involve Michael Myers, but strip away the preconceptions that come with the series and its a great standalone film. Halloween had been a surprise cult hit that revolutionised the entire horror genre, but not only did the sequel perform considerably worse, it killed off Myers, essentially ending it all. Attempting to turn the series into an ongoing horror anthology, Season Of The Witch was meant to kick the series into a run of standalones, so naturally he wasn't present.
As I discussed last week later instalments went back to the tried and tested formula to varying levels of success, leaving III the franchise's odd ball; its one of the series' best entries, but no one can get past how it stands alone.
