9 Extremely Specific Tics You Never Noticed In Famous Actors
5. Mel Gibson's Chain Smoking
We all know Mel Gibson was strangely fond of roles where he got brutally tortured (Lethal Weapon, Braveheart, Payback) but he had another bad habit; playing characters who chain smoked like crazy.
Revisit just about any of his past work and you’ll see him with a ciggie in hand; The Year Of Living Dangerously, Gallipoli, Lethal Weapon 1 & 2, Air America, How I Spent My Summer Vacation and many others. In Payback, barely a scene goes by where he isn’t about to light up, to the point where it becomes a plot point at the end of the second act.
This habit was, of course, inspired by the fact Gibson is a smoker in real life, but in fairness it only comes into play when it fits the character. Mad Max obviously didn't have any (apocalypse shortages and all that), Riggs quit smoking in Lethal Weapon 3 and 4 and nice guy parts like What Women Want find him with a lack of smokes; he probably could have used them for the last one though.
