9 Famous Films Which Were Plagued By Ugly Lawsuits

4. Drive (2011)

Critically acclaimed American crime drama that garnered a number of BAFTA awards, Drive is the story of a stuntman (Ryan Gosling) who moonlights as a get away driver. It is directed by the Danish Nicolas Windig Refn. It was shown to praise at several festivals - including Cannes where it received a standing ovation and best director award. So it is a decent Hollywood production, but it has been subjected to a lawsuit that has over shadowed its reputation, and like a nasty smell, refuses to go away. In October 2011, a woman called Sarah Deming filed a motion about the film, claiming the trailer misrepresented the film (primarily because it made it look like an action film) and she was annoyed by alleged anti-semitism in the film. Therefore the film violated the MCPA (Michigan Consumer Protection Act) and Deming wanted a class action suit to be filed against the defendants. The judge declared that the film's supposed anti-semitic scenes - whether overt or subliminal - do not mislead the viewer. The case is currently with the Michigan Court of Appeals, awaiting oral arguments. Personally, I don't see how a film like Drive could invoke such a vehement response in the viewer so that they want to sue it. I can think of better things to do with my time and money but chacun a son gout, so they say.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
