This movie is as good as confirmed and it's fair to assume that it is included in the nine that have been mentioned in recent days as part of DC's long term plan. In 2013, Warner Brothers announced that David S. Goyer will be producing an adaptation of the brilliant graphic novel, alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt - who will also be starring in the movie as the titular character - and the creator of the Vertigo imprint title, Neil Gaiman himself. The Sandman's lead character is Dream AKA Morpheus, who goes by the title "the Lord of Dreams" and who is essentially the humanoid embodiment of dreams themselves. He resides in a realm known as "the Dreaming" in a shape-shifting castle and has complete control over all sleep, dreams, nightmares and insomnia, making him a dark and hugely interesting character. The original 75 issue run was a huge success and is one of the few graphic novels ever to be on the New York Times Best Seller list. There is also a current, short ongoing series to commemorate the title's 25th anniversary, with two of the six issues having been released so far and this could suitably whet the appetites of fans anticipating the movie adaptation. The movie will likely be a standalone effort, as Dream isn't generally associated with the characters in the other movies in this list. He did briefly interact with the Justice League International in the fifth issue of his original run and has encountered the likes of the Martian Manhunter, but that's hardly a basis to have him meet the likes of Superman and Batman in the live action DC universe. Plus, there's also the fact that the story of Dream is strong enough to not require having to branch out and mingle with other characters - it's just that good.
