9 Films That Changed Due To Fan Backlash
7. Star Trek Beyond
Star Trek Into Darkness is by no means a bad film, but it received a lot of criticism for essentially rehashing the events of Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan - which many fans believe is the greatest Trek movie ever made - as well as "dumbing down" a sci-fi property that is known for being more thoughtful than the likes of Star Wars, turning it into a more traditional blockbuster.
So, when it came time to make the third film in the reboot series - 2016's Star Trek Beyond - writers Simon Pegg and Doug Jung took this negative feedback to heart, switching up the formula of the threequel to make it feel more "Star-Trekky" than the previous two instalments, something Pegg discussed in an interview with JoBlo.
“The thing with Beyond, I think the time is sort of born that out in terms of its popularity and the constant feedback I get from the Star Trek community, which seems very grateful, and that's who we... 'cause I felt they were done a slight disservice, maybe, with Into Darkness, 'cause it was quite... it was divisive, I think. And so Doug and I tried to sort of pull it back to almost a giant episode was our agreement that we came up with".
The basic idea of Beyond was to make it feel like a feature-length episode of the TV series, as opposed to its predecessors, which felt more like Star Wars-style blockbusters. Judging by the film's positive reception, Pegg and Jung succeeded, though sadly, that didn't translate to strong box-office results.
