Star Wars became an instant hit when the first film, Episode IV – A New Hope, was released in 1977. At the time, nobody could have realised that these films would be so successful, and have such a significant impact on contemporary pop culture.

So why is it that two films in a series so vastly celebrated that films are still been added to the franchise 40 years later were nominated for Worst Picture?

The only fitting explanation for this is that the original trilogy episodes are widely regarded as the best, whilst the prequel trilogy are not fully appreciated by many people, including some of the biggest fans of Star Wars.

However, whilst episodes and two are certainly not the best, they are still part of an epic story. They add depth and new ideas to the Star Wars franchise, framing the important backstory of a young Anakin Skywalker who grows up to fall in love with Senator Padmé and turn to the dark side of The Force, ultimately becoming Darth Vader.

Even though these films are not without their flaws, it’s hard to believe that they were classed as some of the worst films of 1999 and 2002.
