Mortal Kombat Sub Zero
Warner Bros.

The first image of both Sub-Zero and Scorpion here suggests that Mortal Kombat, directed by Simon McQuoid, is going to feature the bitter rivalry between these characters from the games. While Sub-Zero, played by Joe Taslim, seems to have the upper hand here, he'd do well not to turn his back on Scorpion, who will be played by Hiroyuki Sanada.

There are two characters who go by the title Sub-Zero in the games, with the elder version being named Bi-Han. Taslim is slated to play Bi-Han and, in the game chronology, he has a very good reason to hate Scorpion. Potential spoiler for an almost thirty year old game below!

Scorpion managed to kill the original Sub-Zero between the events of the first and second games, though he was later resurrected. Since then, Kuai Liang has been the primary Sub-Zero in continuity.

Having this film's Sub-Zero specifically be named as Bi-Han could mean that either Scorpion manages to overpower him before the events of the film, thus paving the way for their rivalry. Or, what may be the more likely option is that Scorpion will kill him in the course of the flick.

The movie is set to feature a feud between the clans of these two men, which naturally will drum up the drama before the movie starts. It is due to release on April 16th 2021.
