9 Horror Movie Plot Points Secretly Introduced Earlier Than You Realised

5. Nine Dead - The Kidnapper's Family Relations

Invisible Man Thumb
New Line Cinema

In Nine Dead, a group of nine people are kidnapped and trapped in a locked room. They are told by their captor that they have to figure out how they are all connected to each other in order to survive, and for every 10 minutes they fail to crack it, one of them will die.

One of the captives is a convenience store owner, Mrs Chan, who speaks barely any English. When it is her turn to die, the masked shooter first hands her a note in Mandarin which describes his reason for all this, as before he just whispered it to others but he clearly doesn’t trust his verbal pronunciation of another language to get the message across.

After reading this note, Mrs Chan begins to plead with him in her native tongue. For those of us who don’t speak Mandarin, we have no idea what she says because no translated subtitles are provided - and this is because allegedly she reveals the relationship between the shooter and the captives, thus blowing the whole plot.

She reveals the familial relationship between the shooter and the man they have established a connection with thus far - Wade Greeley. With this information the whole backstory unravels. It isn’t until much later that we find this out for ourselves, having actually been told it before just… not understanding.
