9 Horror Movies That Couldn't Live Up To Their Awesome Opening

6. Urban Legend

The Collection
Sony Pictures

A neat little horror movie that brings to life a bunch of old wives tales and spins them into gruesome consequences for a group of teenagers, Urban Legend does exactly what it says on the tin.

Tapping into local myths and modern folklore, everything that happens in the movie will feel remarkably familiar - since we've all heard of those kids that died playing Bloody Mary once, or about the old woman that dried her wet dog off in the microwave only to explode the damn thing. Every schoolyard whisper comes to life in this fun poke at the genre, but really, nothing is quite as good as its opening gambit.

Detailing a woman that gets killed by a backseat-lurking killer after a spooky experience at the gas station, the subversion of expectation is absolutely bang on, rewarded by the deliciously meta soundtrack of Bonnie Tyler's 'Turn Around' as a hatchet-wielding psycho emerges from the darkness. The rest of the movie is wholesome schlocky fun, but nothing really hits the same heights as this masterfully executed moment. Get it? Executed? Yes, a joke as excellent as this campy introduction. You're welcome.
