9 Implications Of Disney Potentially Buying Fox
3. Even More Avatar Sequels
As things stand, James Cameron is going to be making Avatar sequels until two years after he dies. No fewer than five follow-ups to the 2009 trailblazer are in the works, and you can bet there might be a few more somewhere down the line if Disney gets its hands on the property.
The first film bagged $2.79 billion worldwide, making it the most successful movie ever in global box office terms, so you can expect the House of Mouse will want full ownership of the brand if these Fox acquisition rumours come to fruition.
Disney already has a stake in Avatar, having opened Pandora: The World of Avatar, a theme park within the Animal Kingdom park at Walt Disney World this year, but you can bet its plans for the property will extend far beyond rides if it seizes control of it.
The Avatar sequels, which began production in September, are a big deal, boasting a budget of $1 billion. If the second and third movies are as successful as Cameron hopes, Disney might even expand the series into a fully-fledged cinematic universe, or launch a companion TV series to flesh out its lore.
Of course, this is just speculation, but you can bank on those four announced sequels only being the tip of the iceberg if Disney snaps up Avatar.
