Several years before the DC Extended Universe was even a thing, Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller's plans to assemble a Justice League comprised of relatively unknown actors were taking shape.

Justice League: Mortal, which was loosely based on the classic storyline Tower of Babel and a number of other DC comics, cast Armie Hammer play Batman, D.J. Cotrona as Superman and Megan Gale in the role of Wonder Woman.

Common was to play the John Stewart version of Green Lantern, Hugh Keays-Byrne was Martian Manhunter, and Adam Brody and Anton Yelchin were the Barry Allen and Wally West incarnations of the Flash, respectively.

Dozens of pieces of Justice League: Mortal concept art have been unearthed over the years, including this illustration of Wonder Woman springing into action to save a car that has been launched into the front of a skyscraper.

Casting relative newcomers as some of the most iconic characters of all time was controversial, but it's debatable whether Mortal would have been greeted with a harsher reception than Zack Snyder's divisive Justice League, which landed last year.
