The wounds are still healing from A Good Day To Die Hard, which took one of the genre's best heroes and turned him into an unkillable, terminally bored old man. Before the studio settled on the father/son angle for the fifth movie they tossed a few ideas around, including teaming John McClane with 24’s permanently grumpy Jack Bauer.

This was back in 2010 when the 24 series had just ended, and Kiefer Sutherland was looking to turn it into a big screen franchise. Fox was seemingly a little worried about how the idea would translate to a two-hour movie and thought maybe a little franchise synergy would help launch the character, and re-energize the Die Hard series at the same time.

Kiefer Sutherland didn’t feel that way and preferred to work on a solo adventure, so it was dropped, though the Die Hard 24/7 title stuck around for awhile. To date, the 24 movie still haven't happened, and Sutherland came back for a revival TV series called 24: Live Another Day in 2014 instead.
