9 Insanely Ambitious Upcoming Movies You Won't Believe

8. James Cameron Thinking We Really Want This Many Avatar Sequels

Taking 15 years to go from the 80-page treatment stage in 1994, all the way to the 3-Dimensional immersive experience of Pandora we got in 2009, Avatar set a bar so high for itself that the technology took years to eventually catch up.

The sequels are of such a size and spectacle that the creators feared putting too much into one flick would force them to rush through important beats and therefore took another bold decision to add a fourth and fifth movie into the mix by 2016, in addition to the original two sequels that were promised.

Cameron confessed to writing all three sequels simultaneously, which is the equivalent of planning three alien weddings at the same time. If Cameron's work on the first instalment is anything to go by, his comments on exploring 'whole new worlds, habitats and cultures' more than explains why it's taken so long to flesh out his vision - even going as far as to state that the story will follow that of Jake and Neytiri's children, making it more of a 'family saga'.

We know that the first follow-up will involve us delving into the depths of Pandora's oceans, yet it will have to drown a whole new world of records if it is to be a box-office scuba dive worth waiting a decade for.
