9 Legendary Deleted Film Scenes (You'll Never Get To See)
1. Eric Stoltz As Marty McFly - Back to the Future
Back To The Future is one of those perfectly formed movies, and it's hard to imagine changing anything about it. But it could have turned out very, very different. Director Robert Zemeckis always wanted Michael J. Fox for the role of Marty McFly, but when the film was getting ready to shoot Fox was busy shooting sitcom Family Ties.
So Zemeckis went for second choice Eric Stoltz and shot for six weeks, only to realise the film wasn't working because Stoltz was miscast. He was too serious, too dark. Zemeckis showed some footage to producer Steven Spielberg, who agreed with his grim assessment. And so they made the tough choice to fire the actor and start again. Luckily by this time Fox was available and the rest is history. For years the only evidence of Stoltz as Marty was a handful of publicity photos, until the Blu-ray release showed a brief, silent montage of Stoltz in the role. It's a bizarre look at a different universe, with now iconic scenes featuring a completely different actor.
But that quick montage is likely the only footage that will ever be released. Unlike most of the entries on this list the footage isn't lost. It's probably sitting comfortably in a vault somewhere. But the first barrier is Stoltz himself, as hed understandably be reluctant for people to see footage of him completely failing. For similar reasons the filmmakers don't want the scenes shown, as they feel it would be disrespectful to the actor. Maybe by the time the next anniversary special edition comes around, but for now these scenes are likely to remain locked away.
