5. 3D Is Pointless (Again)
Guillermo del Toro made it clear last year that he had no intention of making Pacific Rim with 3D in mind, declaring that, "I didn't want to make the movie 3D because when you have things that big...they're so big that, in 3D, you barely notice anything no matter how fast you move." The net nerds were somewhat aggravated, then, when del Toro did a 180 and decided to post-convert the film to 3D, flippantly declaring, "What can I tell you? I changed my mind. I'm not running for office. I can do a Romney." Though the process was painstakingly completed over 40 weeks, there's little indication of that here; the conversion is a passable, even decent job, but like so many presentations of this sort, you'll eventually forget that you're watching a 3D movie. Furthermore, given how the vast majority of the film takes place at night and during poor weather conditions, the dark tint that 3D glasses provide doesn't help with visibility, especially given that it was something factored in after the aesthetic of the film had already been committed to.
