2. The Life Of David Gale: The Protagonist Was Innocent

Kevin Spacey and Kate Winslet play death penalty opponents in The Life Of David Gale, the former is a Death Row inmate facing capital punishment, and the latter a journalist who takes a keen interest in the case.

Long story short and spoilery, Spacey's David Gale is innocent of the crime he stands accused of, having plotted with his terminally-ill lover to make her suicide look like murder, but is executed for it anyway in a misguided attempt to prove a point.

Gale and his accomplice go to great lengths fabricating evidence alluding to his 'guilt', all in the name of proving that innocent people can be convicted of crimes they didn't commit thanks to a flawed justice system, but this is a twist that doesn't ring true.

All Spacey's character succeeds in proving is that people are convicted of crimes when there's compelling that they did it. Gale went out of his way to present himself as the murderer, and ultimately committed a pointless act of martyrdom.
