9 Movie Franchises That Literally Do The Same Thing Repeatedly

7. Confrontation, Chase... Manure Gag? - Back To The Future

Bond Villain Scars

Plenty of things recur across the Back To The Future trilogy: Doc Brown breaking his own rules, Marty McFly doing something stupid after having his courage called into question, Marty and his mother desperately wanting to bone each other... There's rather a lot to unpack. One very specific sequence of events, however, manifests itself in various iterations over the course of the three films.

In the 1985 original, upon travelling back to 1955, Marty comes across a young Biff Tannen bullying his teenage father in Lou's Diner. Marty confronts the hulking idiot, and a chase ensues with Marty fashioning a makeshift skateboard to escape from Biff and his gang of thugs, pursuing him in an open-top car. He finally leads Biff into the path of a manure truck, which dumps its payload onto him. This sequence is repeated almost shot-for-shot in Back To The Future Part II, with futuristic hoverboards replacing the skateboard and car, and the pursuers hurtling through a plate glass window - the manure gag is repeated later on in the film at the end of a climactic chase in 1955.

Once again, in Back To The Future Part III, Marty confronts Biff's old west ancestor Buford Tannen in a saloon in 1985, only for a horseback chase to ensue and Tannen to get covered in dung at the climax of the film. Let's face it, poo is never not funny.
