9 Movie Heroes & Villains That Didn't Know Each Other Existed

1. Park Doo-Man & The Killer - Memories Of Murder

The Fifth Element
CJ Entertainment

Much like The Pledge, in Bong Joon-ho's thriller Memories of Murder hero detective Park Doo-man (Song Kang-ho) knows that someone is responsible for the string of murders taking place, but even by film's end he never manages to learn the identity of the murderer, who chillingly remains at large.

Conversely, we can also presume that while the killer is obviously aware that there's a police manhunt going on to locate him, he has no specific knowledge of Detective Park as a person.

Each is operating on opposite sides of the case, and yet neither is actually aware of who the other person is.

And in fact, with the film being based on a real spate of murders committed in South Korea between 1986 and 1994, the actual culprit was only ever caught in 2019, more than 15 years after the film's release.

So, Park would've eventually learned who the killer is off-screen, then, but in the movie itself it's left hauntingly up in the air, as was true to reality at the time.
