World War Z suffered from some serious production problems that forced the filmmakers to completely rework the final act at the last minute, and because of all this trouble, everyone was braced for an absolute mess of a finished product.

But the movie was actually quite good, and it did extremely well at the box-office to boot - a huge relief for Paramount, no doubt, who had been watching its budget balloon higher and higher over the course of some lengthy reshoots.

Shortly after its release, a sequel was announced, and after a few years of false starts, the project enlisted the directorial talents of David Fincher, with Brad Pitt returning to lead the charge in front of the camera.

From here, things looked incredibly promising - with Fight Club, Seven, and Gone Girl to his name, Fincher is one of the best directors working today - but earlier this year, Paramount officially pulled the plug on the follow-up, with budget concerns being their primary motivation.

Further reports mentioned that China's ban on zombie films was also a factor in the studio's decision. With the country becoming one of the most important box-office markets in the world, failing to secure a release there could be the difference between a success and a flop.
