9 Movie Sequels That Just Got Cancelled

5. Beetlejuice 2

A follow-up to Beetlejuice has been in the works since the early '90s. At that point, it was going to be called Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, and would've been set in a holiday resort that was unwittingly being built atop a burial ground. Because... why not?

However, director Tim Burton and star Michael Keaton became occupied with Batman Returns, and Beetlejuice 2 was put on the back burner for the next few decades.

Things heated back up again throughout the 2010s: Seth Grahame-Smith was hired to develop a sequel, with Keaton reportedly expressing interest in signing up too. Winona Ryder also said that she would like to return, and the movie was eyed to begin filming in late 2015.

Sadly though, everything fell apart from there. In 2017, Warner Bros hired a new writer to completely rework the script, which wasn't a good sign. Then, while doing press for Dumbo earlier this year, Keaton and Burton didn't sound all that enthusiastic about returning to the world of Beetlejuice anytime soon.

Finally, in April 2019, news broke that the project had been officially shelved. While a reason wasn't given, it seems as though the creatives involved couldn't settle on a solid script, so it's probably for the best that they aren't pushing ahead.
