4. The Nazis Are Destroyed By The Ark - Raiders Of The Lost Ark

When looking at Indiana Jones' track record as a hero in Raiders Of The Lost Ark, he doesn't come out too well. Throughout the film he's constantly a few steps behind Belloq and the Nazis, and if wasn't for him they wouldn't have found the Ark of the Covenant in the first place. Even when he has a chance to destroy it and stop them from harnessing its power, he can't bring himself to do it. He's too much of an archaeology nerd. Luckily for him The Ark does most of the work, as the Nazis fail to heed repeated warnings not to open it. This leads to the moment that has haunted every child's nightmares since the 1980's; instead of bestowing power to them, angels of death emerge and lay waste to everyone, causing faces to melt into gooey puddles and heads to explode in meaty chunks. Since their mission was to recover The Ark it's unlikely they would have played it safe and returned it. They just shouldn't have been so surprised when it didn't go their way either.
