Many people are drawing connections between Battle Royale and Squid Game, with the former being an incredibly well-known example of 'fight to the death' challenge horror. It sounds a lot like The Hunger Games before it was ever a thing, but is executed better in every cinematic capacity.

The film is set in a world in which the Japanese government pass a new act to try to curb juvenile violence and delinquency. Under the act, young people can be made to participate in battle royale style fights to the death (hence the name), and this group the film follows come from a school who supposedly are going on a school trip.

Their trip turns out to be a visit to a remote island in which their battle must take place. They are given equal rations of food and a random weapon to fight with, and set off on their murderous weapon. Should they not comply with the rules of play, explosive collars around their necks will kill them.

Similar alliances are formed and broken as with in Squid Game, and the problem solving and mystery come into play in figuring out how to survive and escape the battle. It's a pretty well-known film even decades after its release, and appeals directly to the same audiences as this now-beloved Netflix series.
