The fact that this is so surprising is an achievement of the director M. Night Shyamalan. Shyamalan manages to create such a spooky atmosphere and build so much suspense that we truly feel that the Hess family stand no chance against the crop circle-creating threat that’s tormenting them in their home.

Ultimately, the Hesses prevail, bonding together and finding strength in each other that no crop circle or alien can defeat. Hence, they all survive and it's only the alien that gets owned (as well as Mel Gibson's wife's implied death in a flashback.)
