9 Movies With Way Too Many Plot Twists
8. Basic
Basic is essentially a remake of Rashomon, which John Travolta plays an investigator trying to find out the truth about the murder of Sam Jackson’s drill instructor. He has to sift through multiple versions of the same event, with each new tale adding to the list of complications.
Once upon a time the script for Basic might have made sense, but it got hopelessly muddled along the way. The stories involve drug dealing, revenge killings and Jackson being murdered in about fifteen different ways; which is fun in a cartoonish way. It turns out the nice soldier is evil, the friendly doctor is a drug dealing scumbag and that Travolta’s friend is the hidden mastermind behind it all.
After all that exhausting info the final twist reveals that no, it was all a lie. Travolta was investigating his friend the whole time, Jackson is alive and well and everyone is friends. It makes no sense at all, and completely contradicts everything that came before it.
