9 Movies With Way Too Many Plot Twists

1. Mission: Impossible

James Bond Spectre
Paramount Pictures

The plot of the original Mission: Impossible practically requires a Maths degree to figure out, since there are so many twists, betrayals and fake outs going on. The basic setup has Tom Cruise going on the run after his team is killed during an impossible mission, and he has to figure out why.

The movie works because of the relentless pacing and visual flare Brian De Palma brings to it, but there’s only so many triple crosses and face mask reveals an audience can absorb before it gets exhausting. His quest to find the mole makes him suspect his bosses wife, a sleazy agent he works with and his superior and the movie seemingly can’t make up its mind who it is.

There’s also the disappointing revelation that Jim Phelps – the hero of the original TV series – is revealed as a traitor, a move that angered long-time fans. Critics complained about the complexity of the story so much the sequel even makes a joke about it.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
