Andrew Dominik's masterful epic western may have been a commercial failure upon release, but it received strong critical acclaim and has endured for the last 12 years as a cult curio well worth revisiting.

Better still, according to a recent interview with cinematographer Roger Deakins - who received an Oscar nomination for his work lensing the film - the 160-minute film was originally even longer, with a 195-minute cut that was whittled down from a four-hour assembly.

Hilariously, even Terrence Malick of all people told Dominik that an earlier cut of the film was "too slow," but given the passion for the version that hit cinemas, fans would certainly love to soak in every available extra second of footage the filmmaker has to offer.

Deakins himself hoped that the 195-minute version he saw would eventually get released by the Criterion Collection, though Dominik seems relatively pessimistic about the prospect given the film's niche nature. Fingers crossed, anyway.
