The concept of fan-service seems to be a buzz word of recent years, particularly relating to how much one should see. Generally speaking, it's frowned upon, especially in large doses. However, which moments tend to get the most attention when discussing films like Rogue One? Chances are, your friends all enjoyed seeing Darth Vader again, and in refreshingly violent form. Surely one of the most popular scenes in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them was hearing the mere mention of Albus Dumbledore's name.

The same is true with the arrival of Yoda in The Last Jedi. He's in classic puppet form, voiced as he must be by Frank Oz, and back to wisecracking and whacking characters with his stick. To so many, it was just fantastic to see him again. To a seemingly equal number of naysayers, it was just pure fan-service: he was shoehorned in for no reason other than to make fans feel lost in drug-like waves of nostalgia.

However, on rewatching, it is clear that Yoda works just as the ghost of Obi-Wan did in the classic films before him. He arrives at just the right moment - one of Luke's greatest emotional crises. Yoda sets him back on track with his wisdom and wit, sharing advice the likes of which many a teacher, counsellor or mentor might share. Something needed to change Luke's view at that point, and Yoda not only does it, but does it well - and in classic original trilogy style.
