Considering the actor's age and seasoned status, it makes perfect sense to cast him in the role of someone who's "been there and done that." Imagine someone like Whistler from Blade - played to a curmudgeonly hilt by Kris Kristofferson - coming in as the older, wiser crime fighter.

Can't you already see the scene where grizzled old boxer Ted Grant is introduced? Stepping out of the shadows of a sparsely-lit room to come out of retirement, give a moving speech that starts out "In my day..." before reluctantly agreeing to train the younger members of the team. It's not hard to put Dafoe's face and voice over that.

The comic books established that during his semi-retirement from fighting crime, he taught young superheroes the ways of hand-to-hand combat. One of those young men was Bruce Wayne, so there's the character's inroad into the team.

It would be wise to bring in the gimpier Grant, still recovering from injuries to his legs, so that he can be used more as a teacher than a fighter, and fade a bit into the background once sh*t starts getting real.

Regardless of how they use him, the character has enough irascible charm and a dark side lurking under the surface that would be perfectly befitting of Dafoe's style.
