9 Reasons Batman Begins Is Better Than Man Of Steel (And 1 Why It Isn’t)

8. Man Of Steel Was More Of The Same

More2 It used to be the case superhero films wanted the origin out of the way quickly so we could get to the actual story as soon as possible. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man has Peter Parker bit within ten minutes, Tim Burton's Batman comes at the start of a narratively second chapter and X-Men didn't mind having Basil Exposition pop up. Batman Begins changed things (to the point there was no going back, haha) with a whole film defining the character and a villain plot that tied directly into the origin. Some imitators got it right (for all its simplicity, Iron Man managed to make the whole film feel connected), but many started out attempting this, then around the halfway point baulked and threw in a generic villain vaguely related to events. The Amazing Spider-Man did it last year and in 2013 the chief offender was Man Of Steel; take Zod out of the story and there€™s a nice, lean ninety minute picture that would easily cover the same general character beats. Nolan was doing something incredibly daring in not putting Batman in the film until halfway through, but when Snyder did the same with Superman it felt like sticking to the mould.
