9 Reasons Zoolander 2 Is A Disappointment (And 2 It's Not)

1. It's Pretty Much Just A Repeat Of The Original

Perhaps it shouldn't be massively surprising that Zoolander 2 is a fairly transparent rehash of the original when you consider the core plot. Let's see (with minimal spoilers): it opens with Derek in dire straits as death surrounds him and he retires from modeling, but he's brought back into the fold when a loony supernatural plot involving Mugatu unfurls, resulting in a string of ludicrous celebrity cameos. Oh and there's an anonymous caller feeding the heroes information, and of course, there's more group sex. That's not to say that the movie doesn't do fun things with the original's formula, just that it's fairly unambitious for a sequel that's been 15 years in the making. Referential humour is fine, but when a film leans on the goodwill of what came before too much, it comes across as lazy. And now it's time to examine why Zoolander isn't a 100% disappointment, the two silver linings that might turn the tide in your favour...
