David Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future had all the ingredients to be a huge smash.

It was the luminary director's return to body horror, the genre he made famous. It received extensive advertising leading up to its release and its cast was absolutely jam-packed.

Viggo Mortensen. Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart. That's Lord of the Rings, James Bond, and Twilight all covered! How could this possibly go wrong?

Well, go wrong it did, as this glimpse into a world where surgery is performed as art ironically failed to attract an audience.

The movie's budget of $27million was not met and then some, as it only brought in $4.5million from paying customers. This shouldn't come as a massive surprise though, as the director's last two projects - Cosmopolis and Maps to the Stars - were also box office flops.

Cronenberg is a cult filmmaker through and through. He makes films for his fans or, more appropriately, for himself. He's always played by his own rules and has given us some of cinema's most grippling grotesque output as a result. But originality doesn't always equal profit.

Ah well, at least there's always public surgery for him to fall back on.
