9 Seriously Smart Movies That Trick You By Having Two Twists

2. Jason's Not The Killer... Yet - Friday The 13th

Twists The Usual Suspects Two Jpg
Paramount Pictures/Warner Bros. Pictures

The Movie: It's certainly not as great as its legacy suggests, but neither is Friday The 13th an empty Halloween rip-off (oh, it's a rip-off, but there's some good gore there). It's got inventive kills, makes the most of its woodland setting and has a pretty chilling wrap-up.

The First Twist: A piece of trivia so lost it became Wes Craven's opening gambit for Scream, the killer is eventually revealed to be Pamela Vorhees, the mother of a boy who drowned in Crystal Lake while the camp counselors did everything you expect of horror movie victims, and she's back to stop the damned place reopening. She does a good job before meeting with the wrong side of a machete.

The Second Twist: But this is an eighties slasher, you need to have a final jump shock to keep the audience on edge. So when final girl Alice finally escapes onto the lake, up pops a zombified Jason to pull her under. In a further kicker, when she tells the story to the doctors, they say they never found the boy, meaning he's still there (apparently). It's a bit confused, rushing through setting up and denying the boy's survival in record time, but ten sequels, a reboot and another movie in production attest to its effect.
