9 Simple Fixes That Would Have Saved Avengers: Age Of Ultron

2. Don't Have Black Widow As Just A Love Interest

Black Widow, since her introduction in Iron Man 2, has grown to be one of the best-loved members of the MCU. She was fantastic in both The Avengers, when she showed how valuable a part of the team she is even without superpowers, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where she was essentially a co-lead in the filmo and received some great character development. It's at the point where it's baffling that a solo outing hasn't been announced. Her backstory has only ever been hinted at, but it all sounded fascinating (all that "red ledger" stuff), and there's surely a whole lot there to be explored. Age Of Ultron did delve into it, but rather poorly - Whedon chose to reveal that part of her training was sterilisation, and that because of this she considers herself a monster, which is why she wants to be with Bruce Banner. It's the centre of her story in the film, and comes out of absolutely nowhere. It's poorly handled by itself, but coupled with the love story arc, which in general just felt misplaced, it feels like a major misstep. Granted, some of the backlash, in particular to Whedon on Twitter, went overboard (that's the internet for you), but it was a strange and bad decision for the character and the film.
