9 Things Everyone Gets Wrong About Comic Book Movies

1. Black Widow Isn't Calling Sterile Women "Monsters" - Avengers: Age Of Ultron

During a brief aside where Bruce Banner and Black Widow bond, Banner refers to himself as a monster, before she explains that she was sterilised during her assassin training, and asks him, "You still think you’re the only monster on the team?"

A lot of think-pieces quickly emerged, criticising Joss Whedon for implying that Black Widow is an abomination for her inability to bear children, and that like so many women in entertainment media, she was being reduced down to her reproductive characteristics.

Whedon eventually had to temporarily quit Twitter due to the avalanche of hatred, and for a while this controversy seemed to taint the entire movie.

Why It's Wrong: If you really listen to Widow's speech and her tone, it's clear she's calling herself a monster for slaughtering innumerable people as an assassin, and comparing herself to Banner's monstrous alter ego. That's it.

The Internet loves to make mountains out of molehills, though, so it was easier for so many to just run with the outrage rather than apply any critical, sensible thought to an incredibly simple scene.
