9 Things Everyone Gets Wrong About Comic Book Movies
4. Aldrich Killian Isn't The Real Mandarin - Iron Man 3
Iron Man 3 caused a ton of controversy among hardcore Marvel fans for its depiction of the Mandarin. Marketing suggested that Ben Kingsley would be playing the supervillain, but as it transpired, his character was in fact a smoke screen for Aldrich Killian, who would later reveal himself to be the "real" Mandarin.
Many fans were naturally miffed that Marvel had effectively bait-and-switched them, teasing a more traditional interpretation of the Mandarin only to deliver a subversive alternative that wasn't to all tastes.
Why It's Wrong: In fairness, this was only corrected in a Marvel One-Shot released the year after Iron Man 3, where it was confirmed that Killian wasn't the real Mandarin either, and the legit version of the superhero was still out there somewhere.
The short was basically an apology to fans for trolling them so hard in Iron Man 3, but it's fair to say that many of them never even saw the short, so still continue to decry how their beloved supervillain was tarnished.
While we'll probably never see the Mandarin in his true, outdated glory in the MCU, at least in a canonical sense, he definitely exists, and fans need to recognise that.
