9 Underrated Stephen King Movies

1. Dolores Claiborne

Carrie 2013
Columbia Pictures

It made sense for Kathy Bates to try another Stephen King movie, especially after she won an Oscar for Misery. Unfortunately, while people still talk fondly about that one, her follow-up adaptation Dolores Claiborne has been all but forgotten.

This is a pity since the film is a weighty drama about facing the past and repressed guilt. Bates is fantastic as the title character, and she’s more than backed by a cast that includes Jennifer Jason Leigh and Christopher Plummer. While it isn’t a horror film it’s arguably as disturbing, especially when details of the past are revealed throughout the story.

It’s also got a gripping mystery at its core, and it’s likely to leave you emotionally drained by the end. Bates has said Dolores is her favourite performance of her own, and after you see the film it’s hard to disagree.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
