At the Mountains of Madness is a project that Del Toro has been trying to make for years and he has come close a number of times.
The film would be an adaptation of H.P Lovecraft’s story of the same name, which follows a group of scholars on an expedition to Antarctica that ends in horror. At one time, Tom Cruise was attached to star.
So, how does a horror with both Guillermo Del Toro AND Tom Cruise get stuck in development hell?! Firstly, the studio was reluctant the finance the project because of its bleak outlook. At another point, James Cameron was on board to produce, but the film was never greenlit because Del Toro wanted the film to have an R-rating.
However, there is still hope for this unmade film and with any luck, Netflix will pick up the project someday.
