9. Robocop
Paul Verhoeven's Robocop is a rare film. Almost unfathomably violent, it's hard to believe that it's remembered as one of the best films of the 80s. Roger Ebert gave the film 3 stars, comparing one scene of gun-violence with Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times in terms of it's comedic effect. Robocop is a surprisingly intelligent film, but it's also got tons of scenes where people are gunned down in the most over-the-top ways. It spawned two sequels, neither of which were as good and basically left America uninterested in more Robocop. Now more than 20 years later, Hollywood feels there's a market for a new Robocop. Despite the fact that similar movies have failed in recent years (ie Dredd), they've dusted off the half-man half-robot, painted him black, and put him back on the streets of Detroit. Let the excessive bloodshed begin! Except don't, because this new Robocop is rated PG-13. That's right. The bad-ass robo-law enforcer has been neutered by the ratings system. Even with a cast boasting awesome names like Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Jackie Earle Haley, it just all seems pointless knowing that Robocop's bullets won't be producing copious amounts of blood spraying from his enemies.
