9 Upcoming Movie Trailers That Are Probably Tricking You
6. It's Way More Depressing Than It Looks - Welcome To Marwen
Though the marketing for Robert Zemeckis' new drama doesn't shy away entirely from the real-life torment suffered by Mark Hogancamp (Steve Carell) following a violent assault, it does feel just a little too whimsical and flippant for its own good.
With a trailer scored to the Foo Fighters' "Walk" while highlighting the wacky CGI action and goofy one-liners, this reeks of a movie that's desperately trying to appeal to middle-minded audiences no matter what.
Considering that the true story, wonderfully realised in the 2010 documentary Marwencol, is a pretty depressing affair, it would be virtually impossible for the movie not to regularly veer into grim territory.
As such, it's probable that when you strip away the inspirational Foo Fighters song, this will end up being a far more downcast film than many are expecting.
It's probably going to end up a bit of a tonal car crash either way, and honestly it doesn't really look good, but given Zemeckis' track record, he'll hopefully lean into the darkness far more than the marketing suggests.
This thing's a guaranteed box office dud for Universal regardless of reviews, so you can't blame them too much for mischaracterising the film in a desperate attempt to minimise losses.
