9 Ways The Batman V Superman Trailer Proves The Movie Will Suck
5. The Dark Knight-Inflected Philosophy And Imagery
"That's how it starts. The fever. The rage. The feeling of powerlessness. It turns good men cruel." says Alfred expunging grandiosely written advice to Bruce about the darkness of... something. Being a hero or the danger Superman or whatever. But while it's delivered by a gravelly Jeremy Irons in the film, written down it's not hard to image it coming from Michael Caine. It's one of several parts of the trailer that hit a little too close to the content of The Dark Knight Trilogy. This line is in the same ballpark as much of what Nolan wrote (see The Dark Knight's teaser for something very similar) and it puts a big question mark over Irons' casting, one of the film's more inspired choice. Then you have Batman stood at the top of a tower observing the city. Yes, it's an iconic image of the hero, but it was also a central part of The Dark Knight Rises marketing. That film only came out in 2012, and while four years may seem plenty of time in modern blockbuster years (Spider-Man will be rebooted again in two), it's not long enough to repeat the same shot. There's a bigger danger going forward with the DC Cinematic Universe of it treading on Nolan's toes - anything less than complete divergence from Heath Ledger could ruin Jared Leto's Joker - and it doesn't look like it's something the film's that interested in addressing.
