9 Ways X-Men: Apocalypse Is The Most Frustrating Comic Book Movie Of The Year

8. Mystique Becoming A Hero Feels Forced

The X-Men producers must have been hugging themselves with glee for signing Jennifer Lawrence to a three picture deal with First Class, since she went from talented newcomer to the biggest thing on the planet since then.

With her heroic image from The Hunger Games this, of course, meant some of Mystique's edges were softened since the character was actively villainous in the original trilogy.

Still, Lawrence's version still had shades of grey and was clearly struggling to reconcile her humanity with her mutant side. Not so much in Apocalypse, where after the events of Days Of Future Past she’s become something of a mutant icon.

Now she's essentially a really cool babysitter for the new generation of X-Men brats, and she’s a far less interesting character because of it. Mystique works best when she's an anti-hero, so turning her into the earnest Captain America figure of the X-Men is not a welcome development; it works for Steve Rogers, not for a mutant anarchist.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
