There's a lot of ways to release your artwork. One of the less common ways has been to throw it out online for free. Granted, in the last decade, we are getting more and more work online for free. But a movie? A whole film?

That's how Sita Sings the Blues was originally released. It was created through a GoFundMe-esque fundraiser and independently produced, before being finished and then released completely for free, without restrictions - aside from not using the movie to make money yourself.

Since then, releasing films through a Kickstarter (a site that didn't exist when this film came out) has become more popular, but this was the start of it all.
