Psycho was, for its time, one of the most out there and unbelievable film ever made. And it started before you even saw the film.

See, back when Psycho was released, people would come into theatres willy-nilly. Some people would come in sixty minutes in, just stay through the credits, and watch the movie again. The idea of there being discrete movie showings you came for, watched, and then left wasn't really a thing.

Then, Psycho. Its entire plot is a huge spoiler, so Hitchcock decided to make it so that people wouldn't be allowed into the theatres after it started. Theatres obliged and it changed how movies are made, thought of, and viewed.
