9 Wholly Inappropriate 80’s Movies That Taught Me All My Life Values
7. Poltergeist
I was only about 6-7 years old when this film hit the vids and just like I assume everyone else, scared the bejeebus out of me, in fact, probably more so than most being the age that I was. Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg's horror masterpiece, Poltergeist focuses on a family whose home is invaded by malevolent ghosts that abduct the youngest daughter. It has been named one of the scariest movies of all time and it has even been attributed to a "curse" for all of the untimely deaths that mysteriously happened to members of the cast and crew, most notably Dominique Dunne and Heather O Rourke. It gave a whole new generation a reason to fear clowns and is currently the subject of a reboot starring Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt. Surely children shouldn't be subjected to horrors like this.... Lesson Learnt: RESPECT FOR OTHER PEOPLE'S CULTURE My humble little town was situated in the traditional homelands of the Wiradjuri people, a local indigenous tribe. We had a lot of contact with the Aboriginies scattered around the place (being a pub) and if this movie taught me anything, it was to respect and honour the culture that they represented. There was no way in hell I was going to insult any part of their heritage in fear of being haunted by long dead tribesmen or their possessed clown equivalent. But this also opened my mind to not only their ways but to all cultures that seemed alien to me at the time. And this in turn made me a man who can proudly say is accepting of any culture that is different from my own, as long as as they tell me how not to incur the wrath of their ancestors. Alternate Lesson: Little People are People too The only person they could call on in this movie with any kind of experience in dealing with this type of paranormal event was just 4ft, 3 inches and back then, classed as either a "midget" or a "dwarf". Once she helped pull Carol Anne out of the television I vowed never to treat people with disrespect because of their height, ever. Which kind of segues into my next example. Other Inappropriate Films That Taught Me This:: Can't really think of one, although it was definitely NOT Indiana Jones.
Passions in life: Movies, Music and Wrestling....My childhood was spent growing up in the "Outback" of Australia (I'm a little bit country) and my adulthood resided within the city limits (I'm a little bit rock and roll), so you could say that I am the best (or worst) of both worlds. A 6 foot 7 ex wannabe pro wrestler (whose career was cut short due to a busted back, NOT caused by wrestling) & muso who has a precocious cat & a habit of doing the wrong thing but for the right reasons. The story of my life????
All demos, no albums ;)
