9 Wholly Inappropriate 80’s Movies That Taught Me All My Life Values
6. Enemy Mine
One of my all time favourite adventures in space. Set In the late 21st century, an interstellar war between humans (associated as the Bilateral Terran Alliance, or BTA) and Dracs (a reptilian humanoid race) is fought. During a dogfight, Willis E. Davidge (Dennis Quaid) and Drac pilot Jeriba Shigan (Louis Gossett, Jr.) results in both crash-landing on Fyrine IV, an alien world uninhabited by intelligent life and full of danger. After initial hostilities, the two eventually learn to cooperate to survive. Over the course of three years, they overcome their differences, become friends and learn each other's languages and cultures. Later on we find out that Jeriba is pregnant (both male and females in his species can give birth) and after he dies at childbirth, Davidge becomes the surrogate parent for the child and eventually takes him back to his home planet, which in turn enables peace to be achieved by the two warring factions. Although nowadays it has been downgraded to PG, back when it was first released to my knowledge was either M or R and I don't believe the creators thought it would be suitable for a preteen, especially as young as I was at the time. Lesson Learnt: CULTURAL DIVERSITY IS A GOOD THING! This film is a beautiful little statement on why we should all just get along for the sake of the children around the world. These two were not only of a different race, but of a completely different species, both whom had been taught up to that point to hate each other without question. But look what can be accomplished when we put our bigoted ways aside and get along. Not only do they manage to survive in one f the most hostile parts of the galaxy, but end up brokering peace between a universe that had been at war for some time up until then. The human Davidge even becomes an "Uncle" to the young Drac baby Zammis and forms a close bond to rival any bloodline. He eventually takes the child back to the still hostile Drac homeworld to recite his ancestry and leave his own legacy as part of a tradition dating back thousands of years. If only the Muslim community and the Christians could get along half this well, there would be no problem. Alternate Lesson: ADOPTION CAN BE A GOOD THING TOO The adopted human parent of Zammis does more to protect and nourish both his belly and intellect than a lot of actual parents do for their kids today. What more needs to be said? The family bond does not always have to be blood tied. Other Inappropriate Films That Taught Me This: Porkys, Alien Nation, Revenge Of The Nerds.
Passions in life: Movies, Music and Wrestling....My childhood was spent growing up in the "Outback" of Australia (I'm a little bit country) and my adulthood resided within the city limits (I'm a little bit rock and roll), so you could say that I am the best (or worst) of both worlds. A 6 foot 7 ex wannabe pro wrestler (whose career was cut short due to a busted back, NOT caused by wrestling) & muso who has a precocious cat & a habit of doing the wrong thing but for the right reasons. The story of my life????
