9 Wholly Inappropriate 80’s Movies That Taught Me All My Life Values
5. Platoon
This was actually one of the first films I ever saw in a theatre (instead of a cinema we had a drive-in that we could attend in the neighbouring town) and I actually think if my mother had ever found out she would've freaked. But as such my father and his friend saw the need to take two preteen boys to this definitive Vietnam war film filled to the brim with terrible atrocities and horrible violence showcasing the loss of innocence and the madness of it all. There is no part of this film in any aspect that deems it suitable for children in any way (it's not even for squeamish adults) and out of all the films I will mention this is the one I know in my heart that I should not have seen until I was much older. I honestly to this day look back and wonder when in the blue hell did it cross my fathers mind that this was a film that I had to see. Well, I did mention earlier of how I had no positive male role models in my life. Lesson Learnt: WAR IS HELL After living through this nightmare I vowed to myself and to whatever deity is above us that I would never take part of any war unless I found it completely justified and unavoidable. Maybe if Nazis invaded from the moon or something, but never would I just pick up a gun and shoot people indiscriminately. I will never purposefully shoot or harm anyone in the name of political ideology or religious beliefs, and if I am ever unfortunate to be in that situation I will make damn sure I know who are the "good guys". Some people might look at me and question my character but considering how many U.S troops died over in Vietnam for what was essentially an illegal war started by their own government (see Gulf of Tomkin) and then to see it happen AGAIN with Iraq. Well, you may call me a coward but I'd rather be that then be nothing more than stupid sheep, blindly following orders to kill children. Alternate Lesson: WAR IS HELL!! This lesson needs to be re-enforced. Other Inappropriate Films That Taught Me This: Red Dawn, The Terminator, First Blood
Passions in life: Movies, Music and Wrestling....My childhood was spent growing up in the "Outback" of Australia (I'm a little bit country) and my adulthood resided within the city limits (I'm a little bit rock and roll), so you could say that I am the best (or worst) of both worlds. A 6 foot 7 ex wannabe pro wrestler (whose career was cut short due to a busted back, NOT caused by wrestling) & muso who has a precocious cat & a habit of doing the wrong thing but for the right reasons. The story of my life????
