9 Worst Accidents That Keep Happening On The Sets Of Hollywood Movies

9. Explosions, Fire And Random Burning Sensations

In the bad old days of cinema, there weren€™t quite as many rules and regulations in place as there are today. That€™s how the actor and comedian Harold Lloyd managed to mistake a real bomb for a prop on a publicity shoot for his film Haunted Spooks in 1920. That€™s right: they let a real bomb on set, and allowed an actor to light the fuse while surrounded by press. The bomb exploded, taking off Lloyd€™s thumb and finger and nearly blinding him €“ he had to wear a specially constructed glove to hide the disfigurement for the rest of his life. Poor Martha Mansfield wasn€™t as fortunate when working on the set of The Warrens Of Virginia in 1923 €“ a carelessly thrown match set off her elaborately hooped and ruffled Civil War dress. Quick thinking by her co-star Wilfred Lytell saved her head from being engulfed in flame, as he threw his coat over her to put out the blaze: sadly, she succumbed to the burns she€™d already suffered, and passed away the following day. Luckily, Margaret Hamilton didn€™t suffer a similar fate while filming The Wizard of Oz (1939). She was badly burned when delays setting off the trap door allowing her character, the Wicked Witch of the West, to vanish in a puff of fire and brimstone left her exposed to the pyrotechnics used to create the effect. Seventy years later on the set of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009), Sienna Miller would be caught in a similar special effects miscalculation, causing the front of her costume to catch fire. Which leads us to 2011€™s The Eagle. Filming in an ice cold river, the actors involved in the scene were being kept from freezing by having a river water mixed with boiling water poured down their costumes between takes. Poor Channing Tatum fell victim to crew carelessness, as some bright spark forgot to add the river water before pouring unadulterated boiling water all over his front, scalding him. More specifically, scalding little Channing: scuttlebutt (like gossip gone all hot and bothered) has it that the tip of Tatum€™s penis had the skin burned off it. Rumours that, as a consequence, the offended member was shortlisted with Ryan Reynolds to play Deadpool are entirely invented for the purposes of this article.
